Solo — Dan O’Connor (trumpet)

IN/EX (Tone List, 2016)

EX/IN (Tone List, 2018)

In the solo context Dan works on improvised trumpet-as-object performance techniques and develops conceptual frameworks that provide intriguing limitation for performance. Solo debut, IN/EX (Tone List, 2016) presents 17 improvisations each within a singular exhalation. EX/IN (responses to Dan O’Connor’s IN/EX) (Tone List, 2018) contains the work of Boorloo/Perth exploratory musicians and close friends of this community responding to IN/EX. It was conceptualised and assembled by Sage Pbbbt without Dan’s knowledge.

*I was so moved and surprised by EX/IN, the Perth exploratory music community is a really special bunch of people and I hope to enjoy their creations and collaboration for many years to come. EX/IN is not a solo release of mine, but I’d like it to sit here anyway*

TRACE (Tone List, 2019)

VENN (Tone List, 2019)

OVERLAY’s first double release TRACE/VENN explores the musical instruction of subsets of the whole quartet. With this focus on subsets of the ensemble, the attention of each performer is drawn to the detail in their collaborators' respective practices. Through extended application of this process a complex musical connection has evolved. On TRACE (Tone List, 2019), extended forms draw the listener into micro detail and the ambience of the Midland Junction Auditorium washes over the recording. VENN (Tone List, 2019) works on shorter durations and with more dynamic interaction approaching the bombastic on occasion.
